Your Real Self vs Your Fake Self

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

The other day my 14 year old daughter was watching the reality show of the NFL football player Terrel Owens, also know as T.O. on VH1. This particular episode showed Owens going back to his little hometown.

However this was more than just going back to your hometown. He had to go go back and confront many of the issues in his past that he had never dealt
with, including having a real talk with his mom and his dad, whom he never really got to know while growing up.

All of this proved too much and revealed a side of Owens that many of his fans and other people have never seen. He actually became emotional and had
tears streaming down his face.

Upon seeing this my daughter replied that she didn’t think it was a “cool thing” for him to do. I was surprised, and asked her why she felt that way.

She replied that “he is this big guy, and he shouldn’t be crying.”

I told her that I didn’t see anything wrong with him, showing his true feelings.

While thinking about this I realized that many of us bury our feelings and show people what we think they want to see. We pretend to be tough even though >
we’re not, for fear of what others may think of us.

I am guilty of this myself. For many years I hid the real me inside, and showed people what I thought they wanted to see. But I realized that people are not really interested in what you’re showing them.

They want to get to know the real you. And the only way the “real you” can be seen is when you drop all the pretense and just show yourself as you are with
all your insecurities and baggage.

When we do that people actualy realize that we’re no different from each other… we’re actually the same.

We all have the same dreams and fears. By being real with each other we can better help one another deal with whatever the issues we’re facing.

Just thought, I’d share that with you today.

I welcome your comments and wish you a great day.
